New Shembe leader is announced

Phinda Shembe, who is an attorney by profession, has vowed to work towards ensuring unity within the church.

THERE was frenzied jubilation following the announcement of a new leader of the Nazareth Baptist Church, popularly known as ‘Shembe’, last Saturday during a church service at the Thembezinhle Temple in Mtwalume.

Phinda Shembe (59) was appointed as the church’s new leader after the death of Inkosi Vela Shembe, who died at his home after having suffered a short illness.

The long awaited announcement was made by the late leader’s lawyer, Trevor Nkosi, following Vela Shembe’s directions to choose his elder brother to succeed him.

Phinda Shembe, who is an attorney by profession, has vowed to work towards ensuring unity within the church.

“If you are given a task without lobbying for it, it humbles you. I am honoured to serve my people,” he said.

Shembe church spokesman, Nkululeko Mthethwa, told reporters that, with the new appointment, Mr Shembe would have to leave his law profession, which he had served for over 20 years, in order to fulfil his brother’s wishes and serve God.

According to Mr Mthethwa the congregants have welcomed the new leader with joy.

Mr Shembe has one wife and three children.
