Looking back on South Coast history: April 28 to May 1

It was a week of good news, though some of the great plans took longer than expected to become reality.

STEPS were taken to extend the holiday season.

April 28

1967
“AN inaugural meeting was held in Margate with the object of promoting fishing as a major out-of-season attraction on the South Coast.”

“THE executive committee of the Port Shepstone and District Amateur Swimming Club resolved to proceed with the final negotiations and construction of the international size district swimming bath, in the valley between the high school and junior school residences.”

1989
“WE must react on hard facts and scientific evidence, the Shelly Beach Town Board said this week.”

April 29

1983
MARGATE Air applied for a licence to fly a direct route from Johannesburg to Margate and return.

1988
“THE main Harding road has been declared a national road and funds are being made available to upgrade the road to improved standards.”

1937
THE South Coast welcomed the news that £35 000 had been voted for the Umtamvuna bridge, near Port Edward, £15 000 of which would be spent that year. (It would be 30 years before the bridge actually opened.)

ANOTHER piece of good news was that the railway administration was actually intending to improve the buses.

“THE first hole-in-one ever achieved at St Michael’s golf course goes to the credit of Doug Bruce-Alexander, who performed the perfect fluke at the short sixth on Wednesday afternoon last week.”

PALMS and bunting greeted the first trains on new bridge

1970
“A RAMSGATE telephone operator worked a call from Ramsgate, South Africa to Ayr in Scotland – all in the space of five minutes.”

“SAINT Katharine’s Playcentre in Port Shepstone will always be noted for its courage in deciding to go multiracial.”
