Rape crisis centre in the spotlight at Stonecroft Ministries’ meeting
No matter what your gender, race, religion or age, anyone can become a victim of sexual violence.
Port Shepstone has arguably one of the most advanced rape crisis centres around, the Thuthuzela Care Centre, situated next to the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital
This is according to Dudu Ndlovu, forensic nurse at the centre. She was speaking at Stonecroft Ministries’ monthly meeting at Mbango Valley last Friday.

Dudu explained how the centre came into being with professional staff who assist victims. “A site co-ordinator is on hand to brief the victim on the procedures to be performed, and a social worker will provide on-going counselling. After consent is given, a doctor or a forensic nurse will perform a medical examination, take blood specimens and gather crucial evidence,” explained Dudu. She reminded guests that no matter what your gender, race, religion or age, anyone can become a victim of sexual violence.

She pointed out that the centre is open 24/7 with adequate staff day and night. “The centre also has two women doctors, in addition to Dr Gerald Baldry, who see to patients.” Dudu stressed that anyone who falls prey to rape must remember not to disturb the crime scene. “All clothes and underwear will be used for DNA samples. Victims are requested not to wash their hands or take a bath.”
Rachel Marais and Mariana van Tonder entertained guests with their beautiful voices.

Fiona Kerns shared her life story on how she had to fight against rejection through a great part of her life. She asked Jesus to come into her life and everything changed for the better. Today she can reach out to other people and assist them with advice.
Stonecroft Ministries’ next meeting takes place at Mbango Valley on Friday, May 18 at 9am for 9.30am. The theme is ‘Walk the Streets of Vietnam.’ The main speaker is Annetjie Strauss. For bookings or enquiries call 082 825 3001/039 317 1744.
