The families from Qinabout were overjoyed to finally own their properties outright.

According to a statement from the municipality, of the 663 homes selected by the provincial human settlements department in 2011, more than 70 percent of title deeds had been handed to the owners.

Mrs Mqwebu said title deed holders were usually faced with challenges in meeting monthly bond payments, especially if they were unemployed or earning low salaries.

“Because of this initiative, many families in areas such as Palmview, Marburg and Merlewood are now better off,” she pointed out.

The mayor added that this handover was another aspect of government’s efforts to speed up the process of transferring properties to deserving beneficiaries and restoring their dignity.
