For motorcycle fans, the day gets even better with the appearance of legendary KZN racer Alan North aboard the brutal Kenny Roberts Proton KR3 500 cc GP bike.
In 1997, Roberts stunned the racing world when he left Yamaha after more than 25 years to start his own motorcycle company.
Roberts built a three-cylinder, two-stroke engine with the engineering assistance of Tom Walkinshaw Racing.
Unfortunately, by the time the motorcycle had been developed, tyre technology had improved to the point where any advantage over four-cylinder bikes had been negated.

Owner, Rory Nesbitt from Durban is letting North have a few laps and he will in good company as the Historic Motorcycle Group will also be present.
Some of its 80 riders, riding a variety of machinery from Manx Nortons to Gold Stars, Ducatis, Triumphs, BSAs, Velocettes, Greeves, Moto Guzzis, Yamahas, Suzukis, Kawasakis as well as more exotic machinery, such as Yamaha 250, 350 will be in action.
The machines are all manufactured prior to December 1975 and most have racing histories.
And that is not all!
Around 20 riders from the Classic Superbike Racing Association will be racing a round of its series with bike in two classes – Formula 1 from 1984 – 1989 (currently being led by Noel Haarhoff) and Formula 2 for machines from 1975 – 1983, with Gary Edwards leading the series.
According to the Association, South Africa enjoyed a ‘heyday’ of production bike racing in the 1980s and the equipment this was based upon remains reasonably affordable today.
There was a ‘sea change’ of superbike specs between the mainly air-cooled bikes of the late ’70s and early ’80s when the oil cooled Suzuki GSXR burst onto the scene around 1985/6.
On the car side the big news is Denver Branders has swapped his Toyota Corolla for a Volkswagen Polo and is set to give the Super Modified and Modified category a shakeup.
The action throughout all the classes promises to be fast and furious and the first race gets under way at 10am. Entry fee is R80.
