Diane Pieters of Nomvelo Farms gave tips on how to grow natural organic foods without the use of chemicals as well as on the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient.

“How your food is grown or raised can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health as well as on the environment. Organic foods are good because they have beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants,” said Ms Pieters.

They also contain fewer pesticides. “Chemicals such as fungicides and insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat. You may wash an apple, but residues remain in it.”

Ms Pieters also discussed the benefits of not giving animals antibiotics or growth hormones.

Discussions around macadamia nuts, the available market and how they have taken a new direction in terms of being the new ‘gold’ were also shared.

The South Coast was listed as a good place to cultivate these nuts.
