Karate kids to compete in Namibia

The local karatekas are set compete in the UFAK Region South Karate Championship.

In less than five weeks, three learners from Port Shepstone will jet off to Swakopmund, Namibia, to compete in the UFAK Region South Karate Championship.

Illhaam Amod (16), Miguel Gous (14) and Tyler Cous (11) of Shotokan Karate International South Africa (Skisa) Port Shepstone, under the leadership of Shihan Frank Moodley, will participate in the event from June 19 to 23.

The trio who attend schools on the South Coast are looking forward to the competition and to bring home some awards.

Moodley said it’s a huge achievement for them to be representing their country. “As a parent, grandfather and their instructor, it is a dream to have your child reach this level.”

The youngsters started karate at the age of seven and are enjoying the sport as it teaches discipline and defence techniques.

“The team has great potential. Most have competed in various events and placed first in their categories. As their instructor, it’s amazing to see how far this group has come. We don’t just focus on physical training, it’s also about boosting their self-esteem and character building. This competition, regardless of the results, will mean a great deal to us,” said Moodley.

He called on South Coasters to help them get to Namibia. If able to sponsor the team, contact Shihan Frank Moodley on 072 5533362.
