Emerging artists excel at festival

The winning productions are: Amandla Obuciko (first), Inside the Mortuary (second) and Nonqoba Arts Production (third).

Under the theme Rome was not built in a day, the Inkundla Theatre Festival was held at the Uvongo Town Hall recently.

In its 11th edition, the festival saw emerging productions win awards for best script writing, most promising director, and more.

Auditions had been held around Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) in search of talent before the festival.

The project manager of Inkundla Theatre Festival, Siya Sotsu, said the event was full of entertainment, creativity and inspiration.

The Inkundla Theatre Festival gives emerging creatives a platform to master their craft.

He said the festival celebrated theatre and comedy, adding that it was dedicated to shaping the future of the performing arts in RNM.

The winning productions are Amandla Obuciko (first), Inside the Mortuary (second) and Nonqoba Arts Production (third).

The Most Promising Script Writer award went to Inside the Mortuary, the Most Promising Director to Sikhulule and the Most Promising Actress to Inside the Mortuary.

Sotsu said all participants were winners.

“The artists have grown from the day of the auditions to the festival day, which means that they have won. We have been successfully implementing this programme for 11 years now. I also want to thank other creatives for supporting what we do,” said Sotsu.

One of the judges said when they adjudicate, there is a score sheet that they use, saying that it gives them an idea of what to look for in performances.

Another judge, Bazini Msomi, a theatre geek, said the mistake they make as artists when given a script, is trying too hard to memorise the lines.

She said the show is not about memorising lines and that it is important that artists analyse the characters they are portraying and not only stick to mastering lines.

Meanwhile, Nozibusiso Mthembu, who attended the festival said she enjoyed the performances and learnt a lot overall.

A number of plays formed part of the Inkundla Theatre Festival.
