NGO takes water samples in Toti
The problem has been reported to the municipality on numerous occasions, but has not been solved.
eThekwini Municipality is not doing enough for clean water.
That’s the opinion of AfriForum, whose representatives took water samples in the Amanzimtoti River on Wednesday, 9 July, after receiving complaints from the community regarding possible pollution.
The problem has been reported to the municipality on numerous occasions, but has not been solved. “We’ve learnt from previous experiences that the word of the local government is not their deed. We have to hold them accountable for their duties to the community,” said spokesman for AfriForum in KwaZulu-Natal, Werner Beineke.
Water samples were also taken at the Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary and Southgate Business Park, where it is believed the pollution into the waters of the bird park occurred.
The samples will be analysed at the South African National Standards-accredited BN Kirk Laboratories.
“If the tests find that the water does not meet the minimum legal requirements, AfriForum will ensure that urgent steps be taken for clean water,” said Werner.
AfriForum is a non-governmental organisation registered as a non-profit company, with the aim of protecting the rights of minorities.
Last year it placed Durban’s municipal manager on terms over the illegal sewage spill that took place in Bernadotte Street.
AfriForum is in the process of establishing a branch in Toti to tackle safety issues, poor service delivery, municipal mismanagement and environmental affairs.
A local branch will allow the community access to legal representation and specialists in the field of local government affairs.
To become part of the organisation, SMS ‘Amanzimtoti’ to 45267. SMSes cost R1.
