Koch is taking part in her second Olympic games, having made her first appearance at the London Olympics in 2012. After narrowly missing out on qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics, she retired. It was only 12 years later that she and her rowing partner, Esti Olivier, decided to give it another shot and qualified for Paris. She will be competing in solo races (K1) as well as in doubles (K2) with Olivier.

Speaking to the SUN before the Olympics, Koch said the international races she took part in earlier this year were of a high standard and allowed her to identify areas of improvement.

Her first race at the Olympics is on August 6 when she and Olivier compete in the K2 2 500m heat at 12:10 South African time. If they qualify, they will race in the quarter-finals on the same day at 14:10. On August 7, Koch competes in a solo K1 500m heat at 09:30 South African time. If she qualifies, she will participate in the quarter-final later that day at 13:30.
