Extortion and corruption accused police officers to return to court in 2026

The seven SAPS members are accused of kidnapping a zama zama, demanding cash and were later intercepted by the JMPD TRU.

The JMPD Tactical Reaction Unit (TRU) arrested seven SAPS officers on October 22.

The officers allegedly extorted and kidnapped an illegal miner (zama zama) they found with gold-refining materials and gold-bearing soil.

The incident unfolded when the officers reportedly demanded R5 000 from the miner, later increasing the amount to R30 000.

They allegedly took the victim to a loan facility to secure the payment, but the TRU intervened and made the arrests.

All of the accused were then released on bail.

On November 6, the accused policemen returned to Boosyens Magistrate’s Court.

The proceedings began with a lengthy delay as the prisoners arrived late from Johannesburg Prison. The case was eventually called last on the court roll.

Defence attorney Nastasja Otrebski was not present in court. A colleague, Miss Venter, stood in for her.

Various aspects of the case still required further investigation, including a ballistic report and witness assessments.
Magistrate Habib expressed the need for diligence from the investigating team involved in the case.

“I would hope that the investigating officer, the ballistic team and JMPD officers will work together to get the investigation completed correctly,” said Magistrate Habib.

The case was postponed to January 20, 2026, for further investigation, when ballistic evidence is expected to be considered.
