The Winnie Mabaso Foundation from Ennerdale was at Checkers The Glen to sell coriander to the public on Market Day, May 16.
Emerging farmers from about 50 community food gardens across southern Africa participated in the Market Day at selected Shoprite and Checkers stores. At Checkers Southgate was the Dithaka Dikopane Cooperative.
The Winnie Mabaso Foundation
The Winnie Mabaso Foundation was established in 2004 to support vulnerable and orphaned children in SA, particularly those living with HIV.
Over the years, their work extended to encompass all ages of those who are disadvantaged and in need, from babes in arms to grannies. The foundation is proud to see how Mabaso’s love has changed and continues to change the lives of countless people in SA.
They have a feeding station where they feed over 1 000 people every Friday. They have a preschool for 30 disadvantaged children, a weekly granny club for those in their twilight years and a gardening scheme where they work with the community to grow vegetables.
Luthea Jones from the foundation said, “This NPO is turning 20 on May 25, and we continue to help those less privileged. This includes 22 abandoned and abused girls. We have 101 vegetable gardens in the community and on our premises. We also have 16 boys we are mentoring and a staff of 61 people.”
