Spartans host higher belt grading ceremony

The grading ceremony encourages the athletes to strive to achieve better grading in karate.

Spartans Karate members have achieved their promotion to various higher belt levels at the first grading of 2024 held in AGS Church Carletonville on May 4.

The grading was carried out under the watchful eye of shihan Kruben Pillay, sixth dan black belt.

All the members spent a day being put through their paces and tested on their karate skills. When they successfully proved all their skills in basics, kata and kumite, they were awarded a higher belt rank.

Spartans public relations officer Martin Venter said, “They have all been training regularly at the dojos that have existed for more than 30 years. The dojos were established in Westonaria and Carletonville by Pillay in 1989 and 2018, respectively, and in Winchester Hills by sensei Enzo Pillay in 2023.”

The karate clubs have become part of the community now. It helps to keep the children focused and disciplined and gives them the ability to defend themselves.

“Karate also promotes self-confidence, which is a tool in today’s world of social media,” added Venter.

Spartans Karate aims to develop all its members to be of the highest standard possible and teach members from the age of five to adults.
