Teenage cyclist Keagan Girdlestone was in critical condition in intensive care on Sunday, after crashing at the Coppa della Pace, a European Tour race in Italy.

While details of the accident and his injuries remained unclear, reports revealed that the race had been called off due to the crash.

According to a post on Girdlestone’s official facebook page on Sunday evening: “He was critically injured, transported to hospital and (has) undergone surgery. He is now out of theatre and in recovery but still in a critical condition.”

Girdlestone, born in Pretoria, had settled in New Zealand before moving to Italy earlier this year after signing with top-flight SA team Dimension Data.

The talented young rider finished fourth in the junior men’s time trial at last year’s World Road Cycling Championships.

Girdlestone earned bronze in the Under-23 time trial at the national championships in Durban in February.
