Bleak picture at boxing club

Nick Gordon

A small ray of sunlight hits the red brick building. But that's the prettiest element to the picture.

The rest of the frame depicts broken, boarded up windows – no doubt keeping out the Eastern Cape chill – and litter strewn among the long grass.

It’s a depressing picture, made even more so by the fact that this building is the home of the Sisonke Boxing Club, a setting that is meant to have already benefited from a renovation as promised by the Department of Sport and Recreation in conjunction with the Sports Trust.

But that promise, delivered in November 2012, has yet to come to fruition in the boxing hub of Mdantsane township in East London.

It’s a sad story.
