Popular former ASA and Olympic Committee member died after being shot at his home.

Well known sports official Banele Sindani was shot and killed during an armed robbery at his home in Ruimsig in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Sindani’s nephew, Phelelani Sindani, said intruders had taken a television set and a cell phone before he was shot in the abdomen. He died on the scene.

“We are going to miss him so much. Nobody can replace him as an elder in our family, and we are lost for words,” Phelelani said.

Banele Sindani was a former chief executive of the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) and Athletics SA.

The 60-year-old administrator was still actively involved in athletics as a member of the Soweto Marathon Trust, which organises the annual 42km race in the Joburg township.

He is survived by his wife and six children.
