Race walker Marc Mundell broke his African 50km record in Melbourne on Sunday morning.

The 32-year-old South African clocked 3:54:12 to finish third at the Australian national championships.

His performance chopped 80 seconds off the national and continental mark he set when he took 31st place at the 2012 London Olympics.

He also dipped well under the qualifying standard of 4:03:00 for next year’s Rio Games, though he had already booked his place in the SA team when he clocked 4:02:41 to finish 33rd at the World

Athletics Championships in Beijing in August.

Canadian athlete Evan Dunfee coasted to a comfortable victory in Melbourne in 3:43:45, and local favourite Chris Eriksson took second place to win the Australian title in 3:54:10.
