Raven Klaasen, South Africa’s last man standing at the Australian Open, was eliminated with American partner Raquel Atawo in the first round of the mixed doubles competition on Sunday.

The duo, who entered the tournament as the No 7 seeds, went down to Russian Alla Kudryavtseva and Swede Robert Lindstedt, who earned a 6-7(4) 6-2 [10-4] victory.

Klaasen’s title hopes were still alive, however, in the men’s doubles division at Melbourne Park.

He and American Rajeev Ram will face the US pairing of Bob and Mike Bryan in the third round on Monday.
