Chad Ho held off a strong challenge from fellow South African Matthew Meyer on Sunday to win his seventh successive title in the elite men’s 14-30 age group at the annual Midmar Mile outside Howick.

“Matthew Meyer went out pretty hard and I was just trying to stay with him for the first 1 200m, but I pushed harder over the last 400m,” Ho said after the race.

The world 5km open water champion edged Meyer out by three seconds to continue his impressive streak.

“It was one of my closest races, but I’ve been pushed harder, so it was a nice margin to have at the end,” Ho said.

British swimmer Holly Hibbott won a close women’s race, with local star Michelle Weber taking second place in a sprint for the line.
