Lions coach Johan Ackermann yesterday named flank Kwagga Smith as his new captain, taking over the leadership from scrumhalf Ross Cronje who will start from the bench.

Ackermann also didn’t hesitate to include two of his released Springboks, hooker Malcolm Marx and prop Julian Redelinghuys who has just recovered from a hamstring injury.

In all there were nine changes to the team who went down 37-29 to the Cheetahs last Thursday in Bloemfontein and who will have to win their remaining two matches to stay in contention for the playoffs.

At lock Bobby de Wee gets a start in the place of Andries Ferreira who has joined French club Toulon as a replacement for the injured Juan Smith.
