Lions centre Harold Vorster got an unexpected double reward on his 21st birthday on Saturday during the Lions' commanding 47-7 Currie Cup rout of the Cheetahs at Ellis Park.

Vorster’s name appeared on the team list s No 22, but when he ran on to replace the injured Lionel Mapoe it was with the No 21 jersey, the number originally allocated to reserve scrumhalf Mark Richards.

“No it wasn’t really planned (to swap the numbers), but it worked out very well,” Lions head coach Johan Ackermann said after their rousing display.

“I think our manager (Mustapha Boomgaard) had input there, so it worked well for Harold and I’m glad we could give him a nice day to remember part of his 21st. You know, obviously it’s something he will always remember.

“For him playing on his 21st and also getting the win must have been great, but we have another surprise for him too,” Ackermann said, suggesting a possible after-party to celebrate the victory.

The Lions will host the Sharks on Saturday in the first Currie Cup semifinal. Kickoff is at 2.30pm.

Tickets went on sale on Sunday at R40 per person.
