Lions name team for Sharks

Lions head coach Johan Ackermann on Thursday named his team to face the Sharks in Durban on Saturday, but decided against wholesome changes after their below-par defeat to the Hurricanes at Ellis Park last Friday night.

Two changes have been made upfront as Jacques van Rooyen comes in at loosehead prop in a rotational move, while Schalk van der Merwe shifts to the bench to provide cover.

In a big setback, flank Jaco Kriel has been withdrawn due to the recurrence of a groin injury which will see Derick Minnie being moved to openside and Warwick Tecklenburg called up to the starting line-up to fill the right flank berth.

There have been absolutely no changes to the starting Lions backline for this match, with Ackermann keeping faith in flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff despite his mediocre kicking performance during last weekend’s 22-8 opening loss to the Hurricanes.

Meanwhile, on the wood, both Springboks hooker Robbie Coetzee and prop Julian Redelinghuys have recovered from their respective injuries and have been called up to cover the hooker and prop berths respectively.

Coetzee’s return from a neck injury sees Akker van der Merwe losing his spot in the match-23, while Redelinghuys has recovered from a hamstring strain to replace the Pumas’ loan prop Corne Fourie.

Twenty-year-old lock JP du Preez will look to make his Super Rugby debut should he get a run off the wood. Additionally, Ruaan Lerm will provide loose-forward cover and is also a potential debutant.

Centre Harold Vorster has been drafted in and will also make his Super Rugby debut should he play on Saturday. All three of these players have worked their way through the Golden Lions junior ranks.

Kick-off is at 7.10pm local time.
