The Lions squad departed for their tour on Sunday evening and will only arrive late Monday night for their opening game this Saturday against the Blues in Albany.

The Lions also play the Crusaders, the Rebels and Reds on tour.

Apart from the 23 players who did duty in the nailbiting 22-19 loss to the Stormers at Ellis Park on Saturday evening, four additional players have been added to the touring party.

They are lock Andries Ferreira, wing Courtnal Skosan, prop Jacques van Rooyen and flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff.

Ferreira, the former Cheetahs lock, recently joined the Lions, while Boshoff was not part of the match-day squad last weekend with Elton Jantjies starting ahead of him and Jaco van der Walt introduced late in the game as a replacement from the bench.

With two hookers named in Robbie Coetzee and Akker van der Merwe, Malcolm Marx was the unlucky player to lose out after he started the Lions’ first two matches against the Hurricanes and the Sharks.

Other players not considered through injury include lock MB Lusaseni and centres Stokkies Hanekom and Alwyn Hollenbach.

The Lions have lost all three of their opening matches of the season, 22-8 against the Hurricanes at Ellis Park, 29-12 to the Sharks in Durban and last weekend’s narrow affair against the Stormers where the brave Lions lead 77 minutes of the tight game.

The Blues however, are in the same boat as the Lions having also lost their opening three games, 23-18 to the Chiefs in Albany, 27-16 to the Stormers at Newlands and 25-24 to the Cheetahs last Friday evening in Bloemfontein.

The Blues occupy the 14th spot on the log with two points after three matches, while the Lions have just one point following their loss to the Stormers ending within seven of the Capetonians’ tally and are at the summit of the log.
