The 17-year-old Hamilton finished regulation play tied for the lead with Ayden Senger after their rounds of two-under-par 70. Playing the par-five 18th in the playoff, they both parred the hole twice. But Hamilton had to keep himself in the playoff with a 35-foot putt for par on the second hole of sudden death after finding the water with his second. Playing the 18th for the third time, Hamilton found the green with his second and had two putts to win.
“I guess it was third time lucky. I’m really happy,” he said. “I’ve been working really hard on my putting the last few weeks, and it’s paid off.”
Hamilton had to banish thoughts of a playoff defeat at Steenberg Golf Club last year in the Steenberg Junior Open.
“I lost that playoff and I didn’t want that to happen again. But my playoff record is pretty good. I’ve had five playoffs in my career now and have won four of them.”
Hamilton won on the series at Stellenbosch Golf Club last year and qualified for his first National Final in 2014. And he’s determined to use that experience to give himself a better chance in the National Final this year.
“I’ve been playing a lot of tournaments just to keep getting experience. I can’t wait for the National Final. It’s definitely my goal to win that.”
