Double blow for Cheetahs

Rudolph Jacobs

The highly successful Free State loosetrio combination has been broken up as the Cheetahs suffered a crucial double injury blow before hosting the the Lions tomorrow night.

Hardworking No 8 Philip van der Walt, above, had to pull out of the side facing the Lions due to a shoulder injury. Lock Lood de Jager (concussion) will also miss the clash after picking up a hard knock last week and will be replaced by lineout specialist Waltie Vermeulen.

Van der Walt is replaced by Davon Raubenheimer, who replaced him last weekend at Loftus against the Bulls, when Van der Walt couldn’t continue after a knock to his shoulder.

Coach Naka Drotske said he pulled Van der Walt from the field as a precaution, but the side’s other flankers, captain Boom Prinsloo and Springbok squad member Lappies Labuschagne, will be ready to hold the fort against the Lions’ impressive backrow.

Drotske is hopeful that De Jager and Van der Walt will recover in time for the clash against the Sharks in Durban next weekend.
