Avoiding getting caught in the Soweto Derby hype is one of the challenges Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates fans have to contend with every time this much anticipated match comes about.

This was revealed by Amakhosi defender, Tsepo Masilela on Thursday at a media conference ahead of Saturday afternoon’s Nedbank Cup clash where the two Soweto giants will face-off.

Chester – as Masilela is fondly renowned in local football circles – said getting caught up in the hype leading up to the game could easily distract a player.

“It is a big game. There is so much hype about it, everyone is talking about it but as players we have to avoid getting caught in that,” said Masilela.

Masilela said the experience of having played in big tournaments helps him to stay focussed amid the fan-fair. He admitted though that it does feel good when he meets fans on the streets and they urge him on.

“It does make you feel good when fans come up to you and tell you that we must beat them, but that should not distract your focus,” said the former Bafana Bafana star.
