Orlando Pirates development coach Augusto Palacios says being crowned the MultiChoice Diski Challenge champions is not really important as he looks to shape youngsters to be ready to play for the senior team.

The young Buccaneers finished the second season of the MDC in a disappointing 14th position on the standings, having played 15 games, while registering 14 points in the process.

“We are giving our players the opportunity to be ready to play for the senior team within two or three years of playing in this competition,” said Palacios.

“We had Menzi Masuku last year, which was a good achievement. We now have three players who have already signed for the first team – Lebogang Sentsho, Lehlohonolo Mtshali and Sibusiso Mahlangu.

“My objective is to develop and send players to the senior team. Yes, I understand we didn’t finish the league on a good position and it is good to be the champions, but you have to understand that we are building the future of Orlando Pirates here.”

Palacios also added that there could also be more players that could sign for the senior, with a lot of youngsters in his team showing eagerness to play in top flight football.
