Royal Eagles have hired former Black Leopards coach Kostadin Papic to replace Khabo Zondo, who was released by the Pietermaritzburg based National First Division (NFD) campaigners last week.

A Phakaaathi source has revealed that the well-travelled Papic was introduced to the Eagles players on Thursday afternoon.

“I can confirm to you that Papic is the new coach of Eagles. He was introduced to the senior players this afternoon and will probably meet the rest of the team tomorrow (Friday) morning,” said the source.

Papic left Leopards a few weeks ago, citing unworkable conditions as his reason for opting out.

He was replaced by former Baroka FC coach, Sello Chokoe.

Meanwhile, the source also revealed that Zondo was released after souring relations between him and the team’s senior players.

“You must understand that Eagles is a growing brand, and these big name players like Khethokwakhe Masuku (formerly with Pirates) and Dominic Isaac (formerly with Chiefs) are draw cards and are there for the team to attract fans. So if a coach says it openly that he doesn’t need them, he is likely to not survive,” said the source.

Papic may be on the bench for the first time when Eagles host AmaZulu at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
