The victory was enough for Amajimbos to finish second in Group B and qualify for the semifinals, where they will face Nigeria on Wednesday. All four semifinalists automatically qualify for the Fifa Under-17 World Cup, which takes place in Chile from October 17 to November 8.
South Africa went into the game against Cameroon with two points from their opening two games, needing a win to give themselves an excellent chance of making the last four. And Molefi Ntseki’s Amajimbo’s couldn’t have got off to a better start, an own goal from defender Fokem Achille giving them the lead as early as the 2nd minute.
South Africa doubled their lead on the stroke of half time, captain Nelson Maluleke firing home a penalty after striker Sibongakonke Mbatha had been brought down in the box.
Cameroon pulled a goal back two minutes into the second half as Christian Bayemi netted, but ten minutes later Maluleke grabbed his brace, and Amajimbos saw out a famous win.
