Jomo Cosmos recorded their third victory of the season after overcoming Orlando Pirates 1-0 at Olen Park, Potchefstroom on Saturday evening.

Charlton Mashumba, who wasted a couple of opportunities in the game, made amends in the 75th minute with a wonderfully taken short and his goal was more than enough to hand Ezenkosi the much needed win.

The game started on a high pace, but the teams were failing to put the ball in the back of the net.

Pirates could have easily taken the lead in the 26th minute. A cross from Thabo Rakhale at the right flank, found Lehlohonolo Majoro in the box with the keeper beaten, but the striker failed to tap the ball into an open net.

Pirates enjoyed much of the possession in the game, as they searched for a goal, but the Cosmos defence remained firm, with the help of goalkeeper Sherwin Naicker pulling out some great saves.

Ezenkosi got the real chance to open the scoring in the 33rd minute. Charlton Mashumba finding himself in front of the goals with the goal-keeper beaten, but the striker failed to control the ball.

Pirates had another chance to be on the lead, after being awarded a penalty when Thamsanqa Gabuza was fouled inside the box. Majoro stepped up to take it, but Naicker pulled out a great save to deny Bucs a goal.

The game went into the break, with both teams pressing each other, but none of the sides was able to get a goal.

The second half was no different to the first 45 minutes, the teams attacking each other, but failing to finish the job in the last third.

Cosmos finally broke the deadlock on the 75th minute, after Mashumba pulled away from the Buccaneers defence with pace, and the striker beat Brighton Mhlongo into the left side of the bottom corner.

The victory saw Jomo Sono’s club go on 13 points in the league, but remained on 14th position.
