Volkswagen making waves in Port Elizabeth
This coming weekend will be the third consecutive Open of Surfing, which forms part of City Surf Series sponsored by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The event will be taking place from 13 – 17 June at Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth.
While only a qualifying series, there has been a tremendous increase in some of the best international and local entrants and a record amount of woman surfers. Presented by Hurley it is the biggest woman’s World Surf League qualifying series event on the African continent with the six divisions sharing prize money worth R500 000.
“As title sponsor of this event as well as the official vehicle partner to the City Surf Series, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles continues to support surfing in South Africa, thus enabling young, up and coming athletes to realise that they too can be a dominant force at the QS tour,” Andile Dlamini, Head of Volkswagen Group South Africa Communications.
Volkswagen has a long-standing history with the surfing culture, celebrating that; a spectator will be rewarded with a limited edition custom-designed surfboard shaped by Henry Chomper and designed by Martin Lund while Surfing South Africa’s best performing rising star will be awarded a second custom board designed by Mr Migo commissioned by Volkswagen.
The under-18 champions and the SSA Longboard Men’s and Women’s divisions will be crowned on Sunday as part of the Youth Day celebrations and the QS3000 Woman’s division will be celebrated on Monday, the last day of the event. Also on the City Surf Series itinerary is a community beach clean-up.
