Brake failure: what you can do

WHEN your brakes fail, there isn’t much one can do, said Automobile Association spokesperson Gary Ronald.

However, Ronald suggested that one should try to slow down by pumping the brake pedal and changing gears.

“But often there is no time to change the gears to slow down,” he added.

If all else fails, drive into the gutter to avoid accidents, he advised.

Ronald said it is more difficult for trucks to slow down when their brakes are not working.

“Brake failure has a huge impact on trucks. Usually when truck drivers try to change gears to slow down, the gear gets stuck on neutral and then they can’t get to the desired gear. It’s a crash waiting to happen,” he said.
