MOTORISTS have received a brief but sizeable reprieve from petrol price hikes.

MOTORISTS have received a brief but sizeable reprieve from petrol price hikes.

The Energy Department said yesterday the price of petrol will drop 55c a litre from next Wednesday.

The wholesale price of diesel will drop by 24,8 cents a litre.

The department said the maximum retail price for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will decrease by 99 cents a kilogram.

Thami Bolani of the National Consumer Forum said consumers should not expect regular price cuts.

“The big question is how long is this trend going to last? This is good, but it is temporary relief,” he said.

Chris Hart, chief economist at Investment Solutions, said the long term trend for the petrol price still points up.
