A Pietermaritzburg car dealer was arrested after he allegedly defrauded a woman who sold her car to him. Car Connection managing director Bheki Zondi (39) appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday and was released on bail.

It is alleged that Zondi failed to pay Londiwe Zondi for her car after promising to sell it on her behalf.

Londiwe Zondi said Zondi told her the car was not sold, but, “I was surprised when I received a letter from my bank informing me that I had paid the outstanding amount I owed for the car”.

On inquiring from Zondi, she discovered that the car had indeed been sold. “He told me he had been too busy to call me and tell me about the sale.”

Londiwe alleges that Zondi signed a cheque for R31 000 for her, but when she tried to cash the cheque, it bounced. “I was told there was no money in the cheque account. When I confronted him, he said I will meet him in court, that’s when I decided to file charges.”
