FORMER police director Harriram Badul and four co-accused will stand trial in the Pietermaritzburg high court from July 30 to September 28 on charges including racketeering, fraud, theft, corruption and money laundering.
Although the indictment was served on the five men some time ago, the trial date was only finalised yesterday.
Badul, Suresh Naraindath, Yunus Khan, Bhekuyise Nkabini and Sigamoney Pillay face a total of 128 charges.
The State alleges that Badul was the manager of a criminal enterprise involving the other accused.
The indictment outlines a pattern of crime allegedly committed over a two-year period, allegedly with Badul at the helm.
The state alleges that the objectives of the criminal enterprise were to procure goods and services — ostensibly on behalf of the Mountain Rise police station — but from which the accused derived personal benefit in a variety of ways.
The five accused appeared briefly in the high court before Judge Rishi Seegobin and were told of the final trial date.
