ELLA Gandhi, the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, is profiled in the documentary The Hands That Serve, which forms part of SABC2’s 150 Years Celebrations series tomorrow at 9 pm.

The programme examines the influence that the Hindu scriptures and her grandfather’s philosophy had in motivating this modern philanthropic leader. It looks at her years of anti-apartheid activism, her role as member of parliament and her social work among the poor, as well as her current involvement in national and international organisations that promote peace. Her commitment to the core values of truth and non-violence — or sathya and ahimsa — are seen in all projects that she is involved in today.
