THE DemocraticAlliance is demanding an explanation about the transfer of 10 senior KZN Crime Intelligence officers.

Twenty-six highly skilled white and Indian police officers were transferred to “dead end” positions countrywide two weeks ago.

“The DA views the move as an appalling abuse of power and a serious transgression of these officer’s rights,” said a member of the provincial parliament, George Mari.

“The group includes highly experienced crime intelligence officers, trained to deal with serious crime.”

It is believed that most of the officers are now sitting in police stations around the province “doing nothing or pushing paperwork”, he said.

A Durban daily last week reported that the aggrieved officers claimed the transfers had been done without consultation, and they were replaced with junior black colleagues.

They reportedly blamed beleaguered former crime intelligence head Richard Mdluli for the transfers.

The DA has submitted a list of questions to the KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu.

Mari said the matter would also be raised in parliament, where the DA’s shadow minister for police, Dianne Kohler-Barnard, would request an investigation.

“These officers are the victims of a system that’s rotten to the core,” he said.
