THE number of Twitter users masquerading as Julius Malema grew to 18 yesterday afternoon.

In the wake of the ANCYL lashing out over fake Malema profiles on Twitter, many of the account profiles have sarcastic undertones with usernames such as RealFake_Malema and NextPresMalema. Some of the mini biographies are just as satirical, such as @TheJuliusMalema, which reads “Teh Real Julius. Not teh feke agent” and @jujumalema: “Who do you think you are? Are you not aware that I am Julius, the president of the ANC Youth League? I know that some of you hate me.”

This week the ANC Youth League’s spokesperson Floyd Shivambu reacted to fake profiles of Julius Malema with statements which landed the party in the media spotlight — first saying that the party would close down Twitter, and then vowing to trace the impersonators but not divulging how this would be done.

Meanwhile, jokes around the ANCYL on Twitter have been abundant. A common retweet was “Julius Malema is the reason why we shud stay in school … ignorance is an expense I can’t afford”. South African swimmer and Olympic gold medallist Roland Schoeman also joined in the action and tweeted, “I think we should all create our very own Julius Malema Twitter Accounts this weekend. Homework for all the tweets out there :P”.
