A PIETERMARITZBURG gap-year school has been offering confused pupils the chance of trying their hand at many skills.

Gap Academy is a chance for pupils to get school out of their system and to find out what they really want in life.

The academy offers a small group of pupils a year in which to try a range of subjects and experiences related to various career choices, thereby giving pupils a chance to decide in which direction they would like to head when their year is over.

The subjects are both theoretical and practical. The year is not only about studying and cramming, rather it is also about getting to learn the basics of different career experiences.

Kristel Andrews, who attended the Gap Academy last year, says she is very pleased she did not study straight away as planned.

“I was so confused about what I really wanted to do when I left school. In the year at Gap Aca-demy I learnt a lot about myself — my strengths and weaknesses — and I discovered so much about the various types of jobs.”

The course can be altered, but in one year students cover event planning, photography, career coaching and interaction, personal finance, interior decorating, media and marketing, IT applications and web design, business management, self-science, sports science, presentation skills and etiquette, art, landscaping, DIY, cookery, pro-active driving, self-defence and learning identity.

The lecturers are often professionals who work in their chosen fields and they encourage many learning experiences for the students.

Andrews has decided to study a diploma in marketing part-time while doing event management.

She said: “I have matured a great deal during the year and I have learnt so much more than a lot of my friends who chose to study and then they were unhappy. Now a few of them are changing their courses.”
