Global derby fever in KZN – Derby a test for ‘mixed zone’

By Marc Strydom

TODAY’s Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at King’s Park will serve as a test for the new media manual that will be launched by the Premier Soccer League, and to launch the PSL’s new world-class TV graphic. PSL CEO Kjetil Siem said part of the media manual will be to install “mixed zones” at PSL matches for media to interview players and coaches that have been successful in international tournaments.

“The media manual will be implemented after the African Cup of Nations [in January], and we will test it on this game. It is of international top standard,” Siem said.

“It includes, for example, press conferences like this one for big games. And for non-right holders outside SuperSport and the SABC we will introduce the ‘mixed zone’.

“Both teams’ players and coaches will enter the mixed zone after the match, where the media can have their one-to-one interviews with players and coaches.”

Siem said the new TV graphic rivals any used by professional leagues around the world. “Since the match is being broadcast oversees it is the perfect time to introduce the new graphic. I would say it is probably the world’s best graphic, which you will see on SuperSport tomorrow.”
