ONE person was killed and three seriously wounded during a shoot-out at a taxi association’s offices in Umlazi yesterday.

It is believed that a gang of unidentified men travelling in a Mercedes Benz and a green Audi went to the MNR Taxi Association’s offices in R section, Umlazi, and opened fire on four people.

One person died at the scene while three were seriously wounded and taken to hospital.

Police recovered 9 mm and AK47 cartridges from the scene. While the motive for the shooting is not yet known, police have not ruled out taxi violence.

No arrests have been made yet.

According to the Transport Department, a meeting between the department and the MNR Taxi Association was scheduled for today to discuss and resolve issues among association members.

The person who was killed in the shooting was also going to be discussed at the meeting.

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Cele, condemned the shootings.

“Such barbaric behaviour will not be tolerated and perpetrators will be hunted down and brought to book.

“We urge public transport operators to resolve their disputes on a round table and not with guns,” Cele said.
