FILMS changed over early this week and the new ones in the city are 300, Wild Hogs and Because I Said So at Ster Kinekor; Because I Said So and Smokin’ Aces at CineCentre and the animated film, Tugger at Nu Metro.

Joe Carnahan directs Smokin’ Aces which stars Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia, Alicia Keys and Ray Liotta. The large ensemble cast takes on this dark comedy of interlocking tales of high stakes and low-lifes, with the FBI placing a sleazy magician into protective custody when he agrees to turn state’s evidence.

300 is directed by Zack Snyder and, filmed in comic-book style on green screen, it is a new take on the Battle of Thermopylae where 300 Spartan warriors took on the might of the Persian army to defend a pass to the last man. Gerard Butler, Lena Headey and Dominic West star. Expect violence – reviews say this a bloody take on the battle – as well as homoerotic macho posturing.

Wild Hogs is directed by Walt Becker and stars Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy and Marisa Tomei. Four guys from the suburbs hit the road looking for adventure to ease their mid-life crises. They get more than they bargained for when they encounter a New Mexico gang called the Del Fuegos. Reviewers have suggested that the soundtrack is generally better than the comedy, but the bikes should be good.

Michael Lehmann directs Diane Keaton in Because I Said So. She plays a meddling, divorced mother who wants to see her third daughter married off. So she puts an ad on the Internet and then interviews the applicants. It sounds like a very embarrassing idea, but you never know. Also starring Mandy Moore, Gabriel Macht, Tom Everett Scott and Lauren Graham.

Tugger: The Jeep who Wanted to Fly is a 2005 family entertainment animated film about – guess what – a jeep that wants to fly. Voices include James Belushi as the jeep, Tugger, and Bridget Hoffman. There have been very few reviews, but it sounds as if it might well appeal to the younger brigade. – Arts Editor.
