CAPE TOWN — The country’s longest serving member of parliament, Koos van der Merwe, yesterday caused chaos in the National Assembly with his remarks on Democratic Alliance leader Lindiwe Mazibuko’s new hairstyle.

Van der Merwe, who has been a member of parliament since 1977, suddenly stood up in the middle of Mazibuko’s speech and asked, on a point of order, “What on earth have you done to your hair?”

Without missing a beat, Mazibuko retorted that if he had any hair, she would share her secret with him.

Cope MP Juli Kilian interjected: “Now you’ve put him in his place!”

But the damage was done and the ANC, who had been at that stage at a disadvantage after a sharp attack by Mazibuko, yelled and laughed for more than half a minute, with Thandi Tobias-Pikolo heckling Mazibuko for the remainder of her speech over her hair.

Afterwards, IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi reportedly apologised to Mazibuko for his chief whip’s actions, and reprimanded Van der Merwe.
