Msunduzi fire fighters used the jaws of life to extract an elderly Pietermaritzburg motorist from her overturned car in Hayfields yesterday afternoon.

They worked for almost an hour, cutting the roof off the woman’s Fiat Palio in order to get her out. While the cutting was going on, ER24 paramedics attended to the woman.

The accident happened in Cleland Road. Although The Witness could not find a witness to the crash, it is believed that just after a bend, the car hit a concrete fence hard enough to overturn and crash.

“This is shocking because I have never seen [an] accident in this road since [I] moved into the area 10 years ago,” said a local resident.

The driver was travelling alone. Her relatives, who arrived later, said the accident happened while the family is still mourning the death of the driver’s husband two months ago.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the woman, aged about 70, was seriously injured.
