THE Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust has honoured their Gogo of the Year at Bambanani Hall in Kwa Nuyswa Community outside Botha’s Hill.

The organisation runs a Gogo Support Groups project in which over 2 000 gogos in 26 support groups take part.

Grettah Majola scooped the title and was named Gogo of the Year. The gogos who produce the best vegetable gardens are rewarded as well for their efforts.

The granny group from Masisizane were named Gogo Group of the Year and a vegetable garden by Qalokwakho in kwa Nuyswa was named Gogo Garden of the Year.

The gogos come to the event dressed in their cultural best and are praised for their hard work.

Cwengi Myeni, Granny Group Manager from Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust, who is herself a granny and a Shoprite Checkers woman of the year nominee, is a constant source of inspiration for the women. She said: “So many gogos in our communities are doing such an amazing job caring for many orphans, and [Friday] was about them enjoying themselves, having fun, celebrating their heritage and traditions and dancing,” she said.

“We are so proud of each and every one of them and we thank them for their contribution to their families and our communities.”
