The Gumede family of Mpumelelo extension of France informal settlement were dealt another blow with the death yesterday of their sister and daughter Zandile Gumede (30), who was critically wounded after her ex-boyfriend torched their home with petrol on Monday morning.

Gumede was home with her three-year-old child and her younger sister when their home was gutted by fire.

Her ex-boyfriend, whom she had a protection order against, allegedly set the house alight, refusing to accept their separation, which was a month ago.

Gumede’s 18-year-old sister climbed to safety with the child, but Gumede was taken to Edendale Hospital where she died yesterday.

Gumede’s mother, who lost everything in the fire on Monday, said the burial will take place on Sunday if they are able to find the money. “I’m just not sure where to go and what to do. We just buried my nephew who died last week, so we have nothing. But I’m a person of prayer, I have to trust that it is all in God’s hands now and that justice will be served,” she said.

Gumede is survived by her three-year-old daughter, who is now orphaned as her father died a few years ago.

Police said a case of murder has been registered and the suspect, who also sustained serious burn wounds during the ordeal, is in hospital under police guard.
