Two controversial items were stood down from the executive council agenda yesterday.

The first was the long-awaited report from municipal manager Rob Haswell on what action he has taken on the recommendations arising from a forensic investigation into the municipality commissioned last year by Local Government MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu.

The second was the report from the municipal manager on the circumstances surrounding the reversal of the R20 000 payment towards the funeral costs of a staff member.

Haswell announced the reversal after T-shirts bought for the funeral were found to carry the ANC logo and no reference to the municipality.

The Democratic Alliance asked for an explanation of why the items were withdrawn. Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo said she stood down the items because the reports were not ready and she hadn’t had a chance to look at them.

The report of the forensic investigation instituted by Mabuyakhulu was first tabled before a full Msunduzi Council on August 21 last year — 10 months ago.

One of the recommendations was that the municipal manager or acting municipal manager provide monthly reports to Exco on the implementation of the recommendations. However, an indication that Exco was in the dark on the actions being carried out emerged more than three weeks ago when DA caucus leader Bill Lambert asked for a report on what action had been taken to carry out the recommendations of the investigation.
