JUST about everybody got runs as KZN Inland U19 compiled a formidable 429 for six off 105 overs on day one of the Cricket South Africa U19 Competition.
The three-day match against Griqualand West started at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.
After Inland won the toss, Hilton College’s Mark van Wymersch’s (77) set the tone with Dean Robinson (St Charles) who made 69 in a 141-run opening partnership. Captain Mathew Ford (St Charles) top-scored with 82 and there were excellent contributions from Hilton’s Bantu Futshane (47) and Tom Curran (77 not out). Robin Mitchell (St Charles) weighed in with 30. Clive Steenkamp (two for 60) was the pick of Griquas’ bowlers.
In Bloemfontein, KZN Coastal were on 183 for three off 49 overs in reply to Free State’s 137 all out, giving the Durban lads a 46-run lead with seven wickets intact in the first innings. Coastal’s winning the toss paid off, as Kyle Simmonds (four for 25) and S Muthusamy (three for 12) made mincemeat of Griquas’ first innings aspirations.
Coastal’s opening batsman Mark Airey (77) and first wicket Kalipha Cele (55) got the visitors’ innings off on a sound footing.
