Education MEC Ina Cronjé yesterday honoured schools that achieved a 100% pass rate in matric last year, paying special tribute to a number that went from failures, with pass rates of under 20%, to full passes.

It was the third time she has held the awards, which reward good schools with computers, printers, science kits and book vouchers.

In Pietermaritzburg, the Arthur Blaxall School for the Blind, Voortrekker, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High, M.L. Sultan and Maritzburg College were among the “positive repeaters”, making their second or third appearance at the awards.

One of the turnaround schools was Ismonti in the Mid-Illovo area.

Cronje said a lot of visits were made and hard work put in at these schools. Other schools achieve year after year, with no special help from the department, she said.
