LOCAL Government MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu, the head of disaster management in the province, along with a high-powered delegation, is currently on an international tour to learn about disaster management strategies and international best practices in the U.S.

The delegation includes the mayors of the Ugu, uMgungundlovu and Illembe districts and will also visit Japan and Indonesia. The mayors were chosen because their areas are most prone to disaster.

Mabuyakhulu’s spokesman, Lennox Mabaso, said the study tour comes at an opportune moment, as the province has recently suffered a spate of disasters.

Mabaso was referring to the destruction caused to the province’s coastal areas last year when tidal waves damaged infrastructure worth billions of rand. Later in the year, runaway veld fires in KZN killed people and destroyed livestock.

“These incidents underscored the urgent need for the provincial government to equip itself with better methods and strategies in order to handle disasters,” Mabaso said.
